Fit & Fab Friday: Women’s Ideal Body

It’s coming to the end of the first quarter of 2013. I’m been on my Fit & Fab quest for 3 months!!! I’m going on ok, feeling fitting, but unfortunately not exactly feeling more fab.

Let’s see, my stamina’s improved definitely. I have no more adverse reactions to the thought of exercising. My exercise shoes have been out of the shoe cabinet more often than in. But, those muscles are really quite a challenge to develop. Let me show you some random pictures of body parts I’m coveting: (KPI: Slim and toned. No need muscles showing)

fitfab ideal body

That’s all I wanted. And I’m no where close! Wahahaaha… At this point, I really wanna salute those with really fit looking body. I promise I won’t laugh at those you-must-have-worked-so-hard muscles anymore. The effort put in must be so so so so tremendous and you are so so so disciplined! I’m not giving up though. My super ideal (probably many years later!!) is: fitfab ideal sculpted muscles women

I know, all work leads to profit, no pain no gain, you sow, you reap. So I’m keeping at it. Three months down, we have nine more to go! Leaving you with my Fit Fab Bible Verse for the year:

Fit & Fab Friday: My conversations changed

In my endeavour to be Fit and Fab, I said some things that I never thought I would say. It shocked me when I uttered those words, and mind you, it shocked everyone who heard too!

The following phrases and sentences were used just this week! WAH!!!

    • I slept in today instead of getting up to exercise!
    • I miss running.
    • Feeling sleepy today cos I didn’t exercise when I woke up!
    • Should I walk up the stairs to office today, instead of taking the lift?
    • Come by and pick up my husband, I will see you guys there. I will jog there

Unbelievable ya? My fit fab buddies say that they too are changing their preferences and words. Like the Bible says, out of the abundance of your heart, the mouth speaks!

Wooooo here’s to a fitter and more fab me!! Leaving you with a funny toon I saw this week:

Fit & Fab Friday: Serving Sizes are important

Healthy Diet.

I always thought as long as the food’s not fatty or oily, as long as it’s not carbo loaded, not sugar loaded, not salted excessively, it is healthy.

W.R.O.N.G.

Of course I’m wrong. Any fool Anyone can tell that quantity does make a difference. Sigh.. I just only finally realised this!

You see, this is my regular breakfast since I started my Fit & Fab lifestyle. It looks yummy and is off to give you a great start to the day! I thought I read somewhere, have a good heavy breakfast. So this is my serving size, I pour in low fat milk, and have an apple! Not bad ya?

Cereal serving size

Well, a couple of days ago, I decided to take my kitchen scales and weigh the portion. According to the box, one serving is 52g. And this is what one serving looks like!!

correct cereal serving

oh man. I won’t even bother putting both pictures side by side. No wonder the weight loss is slow. I’m eating healthy, but eating too much! (and I’ve not even told you my lunch and dinner portions!!)

Do you watch your serving size for meals? Do you feel the recommended size is just way too small?

Fit & Fab Friday: When is the best time to exercise?

It’s coming to two months of keeping fit and trying to look fab!

One of the issues I’m battling with is WHEN to exercise.

Have you thought about it? Here were some questions I had:

  • When we exercise, we burn calories. Are these the calories that we’ve already consumed, or are they the ones we will be consuming?
  • If I exercise at the end of the day, it seems logical that all the calories consumed in the day would be burnt off. Is that true?
  • If I exercise at the start of the day, does it mean I switch on the ‘burn calorie’ mechanism in my body for the rest of the day?
  • After exercise, can we eat? If yes, when?

Plagued with all these questions, I thought for a while that perhaps exercising at mid-day would be best! You burn the stuff you ate in the morning and get to burn the future calories in the afternoon. But I decided it’s best to ask the pros!

So I emailed the trainers at Insane Home Fat Loss  and this was their reply:

We recommend to perform these workouts first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (have plenty of water first), the reason why is because your body is on a deprivation mode at that time, which means your ability to burn body fat as energy is highly increased. Don't worry about losing muscle, the workouts are short and intense and as long as you're eating a full meal right after, you're on the right track. Also i suggest to perform these workouts about 6 days a week and taking one full day off to allow proper recover to occur.

Woah!! It made sense! And certainly explain what many fitness articles say about having adequate sleep, that’s when our body replenishes, and in turn does some burning too.

My schedule, as many of you have read starts at 6 a.m. (My daughter did an article here) With this new initiative to start my day with exercise, check out my alarms for the week:

Fit & Fab Friday: Evaluation & Insane Home Fat Loss

It’s evaluation time as we start a new month. I’ll do the technicalities before touching my raw emotions.

TECHNICALITIES

No. of days since I started: 31 days

No. of days I ran at least 2.4km: 16 days

Longest distance ran: 5.99km

Shortest distance ran: 2.34km

Fastest pace: 7:23 avg. min/km

Weight loss: 2.7kg (so pathetic!!)

FOOD

Breakfast: Cereal with low fat milk or 2 slices wholemeal bread plain and an apple

Lunch: Fish soup or Yong Tau Fu soup or 2 popiah with 1 siew mai

Dinner: Clear soup (all kinds) and a punnet of blueberries or half bunch of grapes

Snack: Plain cereal or grapes

MY EMOTIONS

Quite estatic when my legs don’t hurt after I run now.

Getting a little narcissistic cos I like to look at the mirror now just to see if there’s that little big of fat that left or melt away.

I’m reliant on my buddy chat group to keep me going. Cos 2.7kg for a month’s work seem really slow. I’m comforted to know weight is not everything.

NOW WHAT?

I purchased the Insane Workout by Mike Chang. I am on Day 3 now…. and it’s a killer!!! So I do the run and workout on alternate days. That makes it nearly a daily exercise! Woohoo!! Again thanks so much for the buddies that cheer me on!

Leaving you now with a snippet of the Insane Workout. It’s different each day. Just take 20 min of your time, wear a pair of shoes at home, and have a towel on standby. haha… try it!! Let me know how you find it!

Fit & Fab Friday: To grow old healthy

18th day of the new year… the running and the healthy dieting is doing erm… … … great. Ok. I mean I’m keeping to my exercise schedule. But to be honest, there are days I dread waking up to run, days I think that rain clouds are looming, days I think too much running would injure my muscles … (you get the idea?)

There is one thing that keeps me going. I shared earlier in my post: My positive motivation… … My Papa or the kid’s GongGong.

GongGong cycling

This photo was taken before Nicole & Nathan learnt how to cycle. Then, my dad would walk/jog with them while they cycle. Now that they know how to cycle, their speed increased and to keep up with them, he would get a bike as well and cycle with them.

No big deal I guess, except my dad is 67 this year!!!! He has no problem racing with them down East Coast Park. The kids love playing with GongGong, and enjoy every minute together. And it is very clear my dad loves it too!

I’m not so sure if I can do the same with MY grandkids when I’m older! My lifestyle since young was sedentary.

  • I don’t exercise in any way
  • I don’t like running after the bus unless necessary
  • I don’t dash across the road unless necessary
  • I don’t like overhead bridges
  • I like to eat and read
  • I like to snack

There was really no way I can cycle with the kids when I’m 67. I mean, I can’t even do that without panting now!

It hit me when I realised if I still don’t work out and be fit, it is very likely I’ll be an unmovable lump of fat when I babysit my grandkids next time. In a more present timeframe, I would really like to be able to cycle with the kids without limping the next day and I want to be genuinely enthusiastic when I bring them to the park to play. This is just a teeny glimpse of what I can possibly do when I’m fit.

I am great with excuses, but with my dad as this inspiring motivation, I’m happy to report, I’m still keeping to my schedule of running on alternate days. Yahoo!!

Fit & Fab Friday: The Preparations

Today marks the 11th day of 2013. I’m relatively pleased with how my Fit & Fab new year resolution is moving along. I’ve decided to journal it down, and will be inviting my readers to join me if Fit & Fab is your resolution too!

Every Friday, come and review the week with me at the steps you’ve taken to be Fit & Fab. We are all in this together, and I’m a great believer of sharing successes and failures!

Here’s what I’ve done so far!!!

FF Measure Weight LossSTEP 1: I measured my vital stats! Erm… Was the ideal 34-24-34? haha… well, I’m far off in every way! (btw, I bought a new weighing scale! … oh, and the IKEA tape was for measuring the stats!)

FF food 1STEP 2: I had healthy meals. For one, I started to have breakfast!

For the record, my meals include:

  • One serving of Carbohydrates. (Usually 2 slices of plain Wholemeal bread)
  • Vegetables
  • Meat
  • Fruits
  • Nothing deep fried. And if possible nothing fried
  • Lots of water and lots of clear soup

FF shoesSTEP 3: I started Walking/Running

Screenshot_2013-01-10-22-28-15 (1) Edited 1STEP 4: Have health buddies to cheer you on (names deleted to protect the pre-fit personnels)

You can see, we have a chat group where we report what we ate for our meals, what we did in our exercises, and even share how we can get around tasting yummy food without the calories!

So there, my first 11 days of the year. It’s going good, I’m trying my darnest to keep at this resolution with all the above steps and by blogging about it. Talk about accountability!!

How’s your year so far? Is it still on the fit & Fab journey?

New Year Resolutions–the right motivation

Happy New Year!

It’s time to make known your dreams and wishes. To pen them down so that you can see your Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic goals within that one year Time frame. Yes. SMART goals.

I have some goals that I’ve written out. The personal ones concern my walk with God, family, work, time and finances. It all points back to being a better somebody. I want to be a better Christian, a better wife, better mother, better daughter, better colleague…you get the idea. And your resolutions probably resonates with the same ‘better person’ theme.

Well, now that I have a blog. I wanna put down one resolution I have for 2013 here. I want to be able to track it, monitor and measure it. So here goes… … … … I want to be fit and healthy.

Yes. I want to be able to run/jump/play with my kids without panting. I want to be able to join them with Daddy when they go swimming, cycling, running, play ball. I am quite tired of having an aching back when I stand up after sitting on the floor too long. I am quite upset when I have to ask the kids to slow down and wait for mummy. And, looking at my own dad who had a great time cycling with the kids today, I want to be able to do that with my grandkids!

So yes. I want to be fit and healthy. I will watch my diet: One carbo serving a day, no snacks, no sweets, no eating after 8 p.m. I will exercise: 30 min brisk walking 3 times a week for Jan, 60 min brisk walking 3 times a week for Feb. [Further review will be done in the last week of Feb]

This fit and healthy resolution is a little different from past years’ resolutions of losing weight. In the past, the focus was on the weight. There was no motivation other than hitting that magical number or wearing that one black dress. This time, it’s not about the weight. It’s about the lifestyle. And there’s a positive motivation for me. To be fit and healthy for the future, for the kids. And to simplify it, I’ll be F&F: Fit & Fabulous!

I will journal this resolution. I’ve even created a button to affirm myself. 2013 – a fit & fab me! Doesn’t it look so encouraging? (trapping myself too since I’ve now put it down so officially!)

Fit & Fab

Now, what’s YOUR new year resolution? Here’s wishing everyone a Fit & Fab new year! You can join me and be Fit & Fab. Grab my button and join in this year long party!
