Boys have sweet tongues …

How do you respond when your man says the sweetest thing? You go Awwwwwww and possibly give a whack and go, “ya right!!”

Now how do you respond when your little man says the sweetest thing? You just go Awwwwwwwwwww!!

On Monday, I went with Nathan (that’s my little man) to Grandma’s house. We were returning her car which we used over the weekend. I was happily listening to my favourite radio station, Class 95 when he said out of the blue:

Later when you park, remember to change the channel back to Grandma’s radio channel—Gold 905.

It’s her favourite. I want to make it easy for Grandma when she drives her car!

Now, don’t you just wanna go Awwwwwwwwwwwwww?

FTWM—Celebrate motherhood, life & work

This year marks my 8th year as a mummy. It also marks my 13th year as a working  adult. (you can figure out how old I am!) Out of my working life, 60% was done as a FTWM (for the uninitiated, that’s Full Time Working Mother). I thought that’s pretty amazing! However, I figured & I know for a fact that there are many many others FTWM around, and there’s really nothing much to shout about.

But there is. There’s a cause to celebrate. It is common to paint the really tough and challenging life of a FTWM. (We also describe that for SAHM, WAHM & PTWM…looks like being a momma just ain’t easy!) There are countless valid reasons why one is a FTWM. For most, it’s the practicality of a duo income. Whether it’s a reluctant decision or a willing choice, we are here to stay for sure.

So what’s there to celebrate for a FTWM? Let me count the ways… …

IMG_3256

I celebrate my H.U.S.B.A.N.D!

Our husbands play a vital role this parenting business. For me, my husband is fully supportive of me working. He understands when work gets tough, deadlines are brought forward, meetings are delayed, and most importantly, he understands when all the above happen when there’s a stomach flu bug in the house, when there’s no more Bubblegum toothpaste, and when kid #1 pushed kid #2 down and in turn kicked kid #3. And on top of that, it’s the day before Math Test. I will come home knowing that the medication is given, the toothpaste is bought, the kids’ fight is settled. Only exception is Math. Somehow, homework and husbands aren’t friends. hahaha!

Of course this is done vice versa. When he is at work, and everything happens, Mummy fixes everything. But we’ll talk about that another day!

I celebrate my C.H.I.L.D.R.E.N

Yes! They are my pride and joy. I thank God they understand Mummy works. Although cries of “can you don’t work?” has been heard, they love it when I’m off, when there’s a public holiday and when it’s weekend. Do I want to spend more time with them? Of course I do. But until that happens, they are learning independence and discipline to follow time tables and schedules.

When I’m asked what do you really want that would help you now, I always answer TIME. I want more time for the kids and more time with the kids.

I celebrate my W.O.R.K.P.L.A.C.E!

I honestly won’t be able to go so far as a FTWM if not for a very supportive and family friendly environment! From infant to 3 years old, we have a office nursery! Yes, one corner of the office has rooms for babies to sleep, play, eat, and mummies to breastfeed. During lunch or when I want a break, I just pop in the nursery to check out my baby!

Our hours are flexi, we can work from home or in office. The bosses are understanding and it is not surprising that the kids know their names and are friends with them! During the school hols, you can see kids coming in to do work (ahem…assessment books!), or hang out with other kids as the company organises holiday programmes for them!

I celebrate my L.I.F.E!

Yes, I have a life! As I work, I’m keeping myself sharp mentally and learning new stuff. I keep myself relevant, I earn a salary that goes back to me and my family. And the best part, I love what I do!

Would I consider being a SAHM/WAHM/PTWM? I’m ok if the option comes along. But my own mummy was, in my opinion, the best FTWM ever, and before retiring, she was the best FTWGM too! (Full-time Working Grand-Mother) And looking around society now, there are plenty such successful FTWM with gorgeous kids and families.

It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible. We take some and we lose some. For now, this FTWM is here to stay. Celebrate with me! Hop on to read other stories of FTWMs!

Wave Goodbye!

There’s this thing about waving bye bye to your child.

It starts when the child can barely speak. I’m not sure why this is one of the very first milestones we expect of our kids. Mind you, it’s not just “WAVE at mummy!” it’s a “Wave BYE BYE!” Poor kid, after achieving this, we actually go off! (maybe to work, maybe to run an errand.. but definitely not hang around!)

Now that my kids are up and about and going to school, we hardly get a wave. Thank God I still get to kiss them goodbye, but to get a wave? Here’s what I got today!

Wave goodby

I realised when the wave is from a further distance, the enthusiasm increases. e.g. waving from a moving vehicle, or waving beyond a glass panel or door. I hate goodbyes, and I think kids too!

Do your kids still wave goodbye? Or do you?

Parenting with Love

We had this on our church bulletin last weekend.

Love

Isn’t that what parenting is like too?

With faith, we trust that our children would grow up strong and healthy, have the fear of God, have favour with people around and excel in school. But we know for that to happen, there’s tons of tough love and discipline along the way.

Thank God, love makes all things easy. It really does!

Do you agree?

What is the perfect gift?

As many of you know, Nathan just turned six. And as the month goes along, I realised we have a few more kids’ birthday parties to attend.

Wanting to buy the *perfect* gift, we asked one of the birthday kid’s mummy, “What would your girl like for her birthday?” We got some good ideas after chatting a while, BUT I realised this is one tough question to answer for a parent!!

Come on, do YOU know what your kid wants for his birthday? I’m not talking about generic answers like, “Anything Thomas” or “Rainbow Magic books” or “Hot Wheel cars”. I mean, do you really know what your child likes? Right down the to colour and model? Can your answer actually help a friend buy the perfect gift?

It ain’t about a big big budget to buy the gift. Rather, it’s about the big big description of what your child wants. And I realised to do that, you need to know what your child is missing in that avalanche of toys/clothes/bags/shoes that you’ve already bought. And it shouldn’t be what you want your child to get like that new book!

Well, I’m determined to be more involved with what my kids love and dislike now! It’s challenging cos they change their minds so fast! But I think having a baseline would make a big difference! For a start:

Nicole: Purple and anything Blingbling. This kind of works for clothes, shoes, bags, files, stationery etc

Nathan: LEGO!! The City series—he already has the Helicopter & Ambulance!

Nadine: Angelina Ballerina—DVD. This girl’s easy. She likes repeats too!

Gift 2

Do you know what your child likes? List it out! Give it to a dear friend or a kind uncle who wants to buy something for the kid. Or better yet, go to the stores and just surprise your child! It doesn’t have to be expensive. Even for kids, they do appreciate your thoughts!!

The Kids’ Goals and Dreams

We did an activity with the kids recently—Goal Setting for the new year. They wrote or drew their goals and dreams on a simple paper lantern, and after that, we let it go into the wind. (In the end, we just lit up the lantern and snuff out the candle…the wind was too strong!)

Drawing on LanternYou can see, travelling is a big thing on their agenda!

Now, look at what Nicole wrote! I’m not sure why the sudden emphasis on safe and sound!!

Kid prayer

And the finale… setting up the lantern!

Setting up the lantern

What are the goals and dreams that your kids have for 2013?

Chewing and biting clothes

I have three kids. They all have a good appetite. But Nathan has a better one than the others. He eats clothes!

Kids eat shirt

Any other kids out there who loves eating tee shirts especially? (And I can’t let him wear this at home, he insists on wearing this to school, cos it’s his favourite!)

When I grow up …

At the start of the year, I always ask my kids, “What do you wanna be when you grow up?”

Each year, the list has new additions, and sometimes, old dreams as tossed aside. This is the first start of the year this blog is going through, so here’s 2013’s WHAT I WANNA BE WHEN I GROW UP (with reasons stated in italics)

Children in pose

Nicole, 8 year old

  • Nurse – To help others and I want to take temperature for the patients
  • Teacher – I can teach, use the markers, and choose what books to read
  • Hip-hop Dancer – Not ballet, so boring
  • Scientist – I want to do experiments

Nathan, 6 year old

  • Magician – I get to do magic tricks, and people have to pay me to do, and I get to travel and perform
  • Policeman – I want to catch all the bad guys

Nadine, 5 year old

  • Ballerina – I want to wear pink and purple

So in 2013, we are getting friends with occupations to speak to them so they can find out more. And in cases like magician, scientist and hip hop dancer, perhaps we will get the introduction kit/class for them.

What do your school going kids wanna be when they grow up?

New Year Resolutions–the right motivation

Happy New Year!

It’s time to make known your dreams and wishes. To pen them down so that you can see your Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic goals within that one year Time frame. Yes. SMART goals.

I have some goals that I’ve written out. The personal ones concern my walk with God, family, work, time and finances. It all points back to being a better somebody. I want to be a better Christian, a better wife, better mother, better daughter, better colleague…you get the idea. And your resolutions probably resonates with the same ‘better person’ theme.

Well, now that I have a blog. I wanna put down one resolution I have for 2013 here. I want to be able to track it, monitor and measure it. So here goes… … … … I want to be fit and healthy.

Yes. I want to be able to run/jump/play with my kids without panting. I want to be able to join them with Daddy when they go swimming, cycling, running, play ball. I am quite tired of having an aching back when I stand up after sitting on the floor too long. I am quite upset when I have to ask the kids to slow down and wait for mummy. And, looking at my own dad who had a great time cycling with the kids today, I want to be able to do that with my grandkids!

So yes. I want to be fit and healthy. I will watch my diet: One carbo serving a day, no snacks, no sweets, no eating after 8 p.m. I will exercise: 30 min brisk walking 3 times a week for Jan, 60 min brisk walking 3 times a week for Feb. [Further review will be done in the last week of Feb]

This fit and healthy resolution is a little different from past years’ resolutions of losing weight. In the past, the focus was on the weight. There was no motivation other than hitting that magical number or wearing that one black dress. This time, it’s not about the weight. It’s about the lifestyle. And there’s a positive motivation for me. To be fit and healthy for the future, for the kids. And to simplify it, I’ll be F&F: Fit & Fabulous!

I will journal this resolution. I’ve even created a button to affirm myself. 2013 – a fit & fab me! Doesn’t it look so encouraging? (trapping myself too since I’ve now put it down so officially!)

Fit & Fab

Now, what’s YOUR new year resolution? Here’s wishing everyone a Fit & Fab new year! You can join me and be Fit & Fab. Grab my button and join in this year long party!

Christmas Gifts: Now what?

We are so thankful for all the gifts we have! In the end, the kids were so excited about their gifts, whatever fancy idea I had to start gift opening tradition went down the drain.

One thing for sure, the pink and purple quotient in my house has gone up considerably over the holidays. I don’t understand why doesn’t Barbie paint her house yellow or green or beige? How can one have a pink bed frame, a purple door, pink roof, purple wallpaper, pink bathtub, purple dining table, pink pots & pans, purple towels… … …?

Girls Christmas Gifts

Well the both girls love it. Together with some pink bracelets, purple wallets, pink pencil cases, purple handbags…

As for Nathan, his gifts are Blue, Red or Grey. Blue cars, Red cars, Grey tracks, Blue Beybade, Red Beyblade, Grey mechanism. But he does have splashes of Yellow, White and Black. The boys definitely have a more rainbow worldview!

Boys Christmas Gifts

Looking at the toys, the Mars & Venus comparison starts. The colours, the details, the technicality, and the cost of the toys!! It all started from the very beginning. (To be objective, the girls toys were simply imaginative good old play toys. But the boy’s! Batteries operated, physics and aerodynamic involved and that little LED screen?)

Anyway, today is 27 Dec. The timeline thus far:

25 Dec – Unwrap (tear open) all Christmas gifts and OPEN one gift per child

26 Dec – OPEN one gift per child

27 Dec – Christmas ends. All gifts are in the storeroom.

That’s six toys in our living room, permanently set-up. (See pictures above) It should last till school starts, and there after, we will ration one new toy a month per child.

This Christmas, I’m grateful for all the love and generosity that our family and friends have given us. We are of course ever more thankful for God’s hand and all his provision in our lives. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!

Christmas Gifts: How to open them?

It’s Christmas Eve.

We have bought all the gifts, wrapped them, tagged them and given them out.

We have received many gifts, and dutifully kept them under the tree.

Now everyone’s waiting for Christmas Day. (We told the kids they can open it then, no need wait till Boxing Day!)

When it’s Christmas Day, I’m thinking if I should start a tradition about opening presents. I’ll tell you about it in my next post!

Do you have a tradition for this?

And here’s our gifts under the tree:

Candlelight Service: How Great Thou Art

Christmas. Time to love & give. Time to celebrate the birth of Christ. Time to be the light of the world.

We had our annual Candlelight Service in church last weekend. It was beautiful as we also celebrated God’s goodness, faithfulness and grace.

Strangely the song I’m reminded of this season ain’t a Christmas carol, but an old hymn:

O Lord my God

When I in awesome wonder

Consider all the worlds Thy hands hath made

I see the stars, I hear the roaring thunder

Thy power throughout

The universe displayed

Then sings my soul

My Saviour, God, to Thee

How Great Thou Art, How Great Thou Art

Thought I’ll leave you with Sandi Patty’s rendition of this hymn. Have a Blessed Christmas this season!

Grew up listening to her!

Goodbye Blackberry

29 November 2012 – my life took a significant change in the techno realm.

After nearly 5 years of a 24/7 relationship with my Blackberry, I ended it last night and moved to the android world. The blackberry opened a new world of free texting via PIN or BBM. We could surf the net (I mean we could check out websites), and we had the most wonderful QWERTY keyboard to type on.

Well, things started to change two years ago. The iPhone brought a new perspective to Smart Phones. Then came the Android Phones which made the Blackberry look/sound pathetic. There were many apps that were just not available to the BB. And even the basic regular stuff like Internet, Whatsapp, Bible, Google Maps were slow or lagged.

I was resistant to the change because I love the keyboard. My FAT fingers can’t handle touch screen. It was weird no matter how I twisted and changed the angle of that finger.

But the time has come. The BB died on me many many times the last 3 months. It hung and the data disappeared. Suddenly all the stuff that our iPhone and Android friends did seem very exciting. So yesterday, my husband surprised me with a Samsung SIII! The first thing I did was to download a LARGE keypad for the fat fingers.

I won’t bother with taking a photo of the Samsung or giving a verdict about the change. Afterall, everyone else save for the remaining few BB users are totally familiar with what we are missing out.

It’s been half a day of being BB-less. I don’t miss it that much, but I really really really really miss the keypad. Adieu… it was great while it lasted.

Bye Bye Blackberry

Give Thanks–Friends Friends Friends

It’s thanksgiving month! This week, I thank God for friends. Through the years, many many friends have blessed me, we shared times which we have no qualms repeating in each reunion. There were tears of joy, tears of anger, tears of relief, ooooh every possible type of tears have been shed with friends.

This year in 2012, I thank God for these favourite people. For the large group shots, there’re missing ones cos we never took enough photos! (One resolution in 2013—TAKE MORE PHOTOS!!) And my dear dear neighbour! We must take a photo!!! In no particular order, here are my friends. Thank you for your friendship. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life. Thank you for being there for me to laugh at and be laughed at.

    Give Thanks–Papa & Mummy

It’s Thanksgiving month. Although we don’t celebrate it here in Singapore, I thought it would be a good time to give thanks as well. There are many many things to give thanks for, and I’ll post this once a week this month. And in Week One, I thank God for my parents.

This is us—Papa, Mummy, Min-my sis, Tuan-my BIL and all e kids (gosh we haven’t even take a decent one in a long time!)

Family Photo1 My parents are one of the most amazing pair of parents cum grandparents I know! Off the cuff, many of you would know I’m down with a most terrible Throat Infection. And when my mummy heard about it, she does what she knows best! Nag about why I’m not drinking enough water. She went to the Chinese Medicinal Shop, described all she knew about my symptoms, bought this most incredible box of herbs, came to my place, prepared and a medical concoction for me. (Much effort to watch the fire!)

My papa doesn’t know anything about bees and wasps, but he took time off from work to drive my mum around to buy all that and came to my place. All in one day. And the best part? Before they left my place, both of them laid hands on my throat and prayed for healing for me. Red heartRed heartRed heart

Of course there were plenty things they did through the years for me, but today’s focus is them as Gong Gong and Po Po (that’s Grand Dad and Grand Mum in Cantonese!)

Gong Gong and Po Po love the kids! They would bring them to the parks, to cycle, to play, to hike etc. They come to our home once a week at least to check on the kids, give spelling, give ting xie, teach math, read stories, check that they don’t watch TV all day. (Woah! That sure sounds familiar!)

    GongGong Park

    PoPo NDP

And their favourite past-time? According to my mum’s Facebook “grandparent to hunt for best bargains in town” (no kidding, she posted these photos!)

    Hunting Best Bargains

That’s my parents, no qualms about showing their love, always willing to go that extra mile for me and the kids. I thank God for them daily. They showed me how to be godly parents, what it means to love, and they shaped much of my values and who I am today.

(we really have to take a photo together soon!)
